Chapter 5: Tape
On Monday I sat in the stands at practice, holding a coffee and pretending to read my pharmacology notes.
Nate had told me to come. Brody hadn't said a word about it, which I took as a yes.
Twenty minutes in, the whole rink saw Brody take a hit.
A defenseman from his own team caught him at full speed and drove him into the boards shoulder first.
The sound carried to the top row.
Brody slid down the glass and stayed there.
One second. Two.
I was already on my feet.
I didn't decide to go. I was just halfway down the steps with my coffee still in my hand, and a trainer was running the other direction, and Brody was lifting his head.
He found me through the glass.
He shook his head once. I'm fine.
He wasn't, and we both knew it.
When they got him off the ice, he walked with his right arm held very still against his ribs.
"Acromioclavicular sprain," the trainer told me at the bench, because apparently I now looked like family. "Ice, ibuprofen, tape. He won't let me tape it. He says it itches."
"It does itch," Brody said.
"It's tape. That's what it's for."
I'm in my last year of nursing school, and I know a stubborn patient when I see one.
"I'll do it at home," I said.
Brody looked at me.
Nate, who had come over to see what the fuss was about, grinned so wide I thought his face might split.
"She'll do it at home," he repeated, loud enough for the whole bench to hear. "What a good girlfriend."
