Chapter 11: The Bund Rooftop
Yichen put the eleven sheets back under the steel clip and shut the drawer.
He went up to the roof with his heart going hard in his chest.
Tomorrow, he told himself.
Tonight he wanted something else more than he wanted the answer.
The roof garden of the Bund building was dark except for the city.
The river ran black below it, the towers of Lujiazui lit up like a row of knives on the far bank.
The wind came off the water cold and clean.
Weicheng was already there in shirtsleeves, hair damp from the shower.
He turned when he heard the door, and his whole face changed.
It was only a second.
It was the look a man gives a lamp in a dark house.
"You're cold," he said, and took off the long wool coat he'd carried up over his arm, and put it round Yichen's bare shoulders.
Yichen realized he was wearing only a shirt.
He had forgotten trousers entirely.
"I came to see the view," he said.
"It's better with the lights off."
"Is it?"
"I'll show you."
Weicheng kissed him, slow and deep, with one hand holding the coat closed at his throat.
The kiss tasted of toothpaste and mint and something warm under both.
It was the gentlest kiss yet.
It was nothing like the table.
Yichen's knees went soft.
"Chairman," he said, "you have a very bad habit of kissing me when I'm trying to talk."
"You talk too much."
"You like it."
"I do."
The wind pulled at the coat.
Weicheng backed him up three steps until his shoulders met the low stone wall of the pergola, still warm from the day.
Under the coat, he was naked from the waist down.
Weicheng ran a hand down the inside of his thigh, and found that out, and breathed a short, rough sound against his cheek.
