Chapter 14: Eleven Offers
They sat on the study floor with the eleven sheets between them, because neither of them had thought to look for chairs.
Weicheng had put on his trousers and his shirt, unbuttoned, and nothing else.
Yichen sat with his knees up and his back against the desk, and waited.
"Three years ago I couldn't sleep," Weicheng said. "I was working nights, the winter the board wanted me out. Pei showed me an account on his phone. Ink Weather."
"Qingyao posted the first sketch for me. She thought it'd be funny."
"It was a grey coat. One sleeve folded back over the hand."
Yichen went still.
"The same coat?"
"The same coat. It's look one of Autumn Telegram." Weicheng looked at the paper under his fingers. "I looked at it for an hour. I have never in my life looked at anything for an hour."
"And you wrote to me."
"I wrote to you the next morning. I wrote again, when you didn't answer. Eleven times, in three years. Read the second one."
Yichen picked it up.
Dear Ink Weather,
The offer stands.
Your name on the label. Your house, your fabric, your say over every cut.
I will put up the money and I will not ask to see a sketch.
It was signed with the group's address and no name.
He read the third, and the fourth.
Every one said the same thing in different words.
Your name. Your house. Your say.
"These aren't offers to buy me," he said, and his voice came out strange.
"No."
"I thought..." He stopped. "In the lounge, when you said yes. And at the building, and with the thumb on my wrist. I thought you wanted a pair of hands you could own. Meng wanted me as a ghost. I thought you were just a richer one."
