Chapter 6: Run

Bram came to the door at dusk and did not come in.

He stood with the folder from the truck still under his arm.

"I asked him," he said. "Emmett says Holloway is a care home. Licensed, quiet, with a garden."

"Did you see it?"

"No."

"Did you read the papers you signed this morning?"

His mouth tightened.

"Then you don't know," I said. "You signed for a cage and you didn't read the page."

"Tomorrow the Alphas will be in the hall," Bram said, low and even. "If I make a scene before then, the Accord is voided and Emmett has you moved tonight, and I will not know where. Tomorrow I'll have eight witnesses. I'll ask there."

"Tomorrow you'll be too late."

"Tomorrow is the earliest I can be sure."

He looked at the full tray of cold soup on the dresser and at me, and for a second I thought he would say more.

He shut the door.

The lock turned.

I lay on the floor for the next six hours.

By midnight the pain had changed.

It had stopped being cramps and started being a pressure behind my ribs, a heavy pushing that would not stop.

*It's time,* said Briar.

"I can't. There's silver on the window."

*It's mesh. It's thin. And you are not as weak as they wrote you down.*

I got to my feet.

My legs held.

I gripped the edge of the window frame where the mesh was bolted on and pulled.

The silver stung my palms, a clean bright pain that told me my skin was waking up.

I pulled harder.

Briar surged up through me, and the muscles in my arms went hard and sure.

The frame tore out of the wall in one piece.

Plaster dust poured down onto the floor.

I stood there holding a window screen, shaking and breathing hard, and I laughed.
