Chapter 20: The Offer

Greta's POV

The Governor received us at seven on Sunday morning in her study, in a quilted robe and her boots.

A pot of coffee sat on the desk beside Emilio's resignation letter, which she had folded into a paper airplane.

"Sit, both of you," she said. "I've had a night."

We sat on the leather sofa under a painting of a Lubbock cotton field.

Emilio sat a respectable foot from me.

I put my hand on the cushion between us, and after a moment his little finger came to rest against it.

"Emilio," the Governor said. "You wrote me a very handsome letter."

"Thank you, ma'am," Emilio said.

"It says you're unfit to supervise the woman you're sleeping with, and you're standing aside for the good of the office."

"Yes, ma'am," he said.

"It is the most honorable and most stupid thing I have read in thirty years on the bench."

He looked at his boots.

"Here is what I am going to do," the Governor said.

She took a pen from the desk.

"Greta Wehmeyer, effective Tuesday, I name you my chief of staff."

"You will decide what I sign and what I read. You will have the office with the good lamp."

My throat closed.

I had expected the Deputy title to last me a year.

"Emilio will run my reelection," the Governor said. "He is the best campaign mind in this state."
