Chapter 22: The Anteroom
The chief of staff's office had a good lamp, a window onto the south lawn and a desk with a long green blotter.
I had asked for the desk.
Nobody on the second floor knew why, except one man, and he had not said a word.
At two o'clock on the second Thursday in November, Catalina Mayhew put her head around my door.
She had worked in my anteroom since September.
She had a new haircut and a lanyard with the Governor's seal on it, and she had stopped looking at the floor.
"Senator Spurlock is here, Chief," she said.
"Is he on time?"
"He's ten minutes early."
"Then he's waiting," I said, and went back to my screen.
I had a funding memo to finish, a call to return to the Governor in Lubbock and a sandwich I had not touched.
Through the open door I could see the anteroom.
It had a leather bench, a coffee table and three staffers at their desks.
All of them had suddenly found a great deal to do.
Royce Spurlock sat on the bench with his hat on his knee.
He had no bolo tie. He wore a plain blue tie, and his silver hair had been cut shorter.
A reporter had printed page twelve of the March draft in September, with the strike-through on it.
