Chapter 16: What Joan Said
Hazel's POV
I had not gone home.
I sat in the hospital lobby with a paper cup of tea gone cold, still in the red dress, a hospital blanket around my shoulders.
Nobody had asked me to be there.
I told myself I was waiting for the nurse's station to call with news, and the nurse's station knew my number because I had put it on the paperwork in October.
At a quarter to one the call came.
"Mrs. Dunleavy? Joan Kettering is asking for you."
"Is she all right?"
"She's furious that she can't sleep. She says you can come up or she'll walk down."
I rode the elevator alone.
My mouth was dry, and I practiced a sentence in the mirrored wall.
It was a good sentence.
It said that I was sorry, and that I would leave, and that nothing I had done needed to cost her son anything.
Joan Kettering was sitting bolt upright in the bed.
Her silver hair stuck out on one side, and the cardiac monitor was clipped to her finger.
"Close the door," she said.
I closed it.
"Sit."
I sat.
She took her reading glasses off the chain and looked me up and down, from the dress to my bare feet.
"You look like hell," she said.
"I've had a day."
"My son's had a day too, and he went out of here an hour ago with his jaw swelling shut, and I know who did that to him, and it wasn't you."
"Connor hit him."
"That's what I said."
"I shouldn't have kept it from him," I said.
The sentence I had practiced fell out of my head.
"I knew the vote was mine. I let him sit at my table and talk about losing the firm, and I never said it. He's right to be angry."
