Chapter 7: Dinner for Four

Hazel's hand closed on my sleeve and pulled me back inside the doorway.

"Say you came to apologize," she whispered.

"For what?"

"For the scene at the office. Say it fast."

The front door opened and Connor filled it.

He looked at me, then at the gauze on my hand, then at his wife.

"Well," Connor said. "This is cozy."

"Miles came by to say sorry," Hazel said, in a voice I had never heard from her, small and tired and a little afraid. "He's been through so much. I told him you wouldn't mind."

Connor's eyes went over her face for a long second.

Then his shoulders dropped, and he laughed.

"Of course you did. You'd invite a stray dog to dinner."

"I'm sorry, Connor," I said, because Hazel's fingers were digging into my arm. "I was out of line in the lobby."

"You were." He clapped my good shoulder. "But you're my oldest friend, so I'll let it go."

I wanted to put him through the front window.

"Actually," Hazel said, "I was thinking we should all have dinner. Thursday. You, Miles, me and Natalie. Clear the air before the gala."

I stared at her.

Connor's smile widened.

"Dinner with Natalie," he said. "At our house."

"Why not?"

"You know what? That's a great idea." He squeezed her shoulder, and she did not flinch. "Look at my wife, being the grown-up."

He kissed her on the cheek.

I left without looking at either of them.

On Thursday night, I sat at Hazel's dining table in a borrowed jacket, across from the two people I wanted never to see again.
