Chapter 12: No Order Between Them
Noah already had Adrian's signet ring closed in his fist when he told him the command was gone.
Adrian stood in the doorway of his own rooms with snow melting off his coat.
He looked at Noah's hand, then at the ring, and did not reach for it.
'Valerius named every prisoner in the ward court property,' Noah said. 'That includes the old man in the last bed. The one with the burned hands.'
Adrian said nothing.
'He will let that one die first,' Noah said. 'He will let him die slowly, and the ward will watch, and every other prisoner will learn what the crown's mercy costs.'
Adrian's jaw moved once.
'Say aloud whether you will stand between them,' Noah said.
Adrian looked at him for a long moment.
'I will stand between them,' he said.
Noah opened his fist.
He turned the signet over in his palm and let Adrian watch him do it.
The ring was heavy. The sun-wheel on the face was worn smooth at the rim.
The same die that cut the seal on Orwin's letter.
Noah did not say that part.
'Stand where you are,' Noah said.
Adrian did not move.
Noah took Valerius's order from his sleeve and read it aloud, clause by clause, the way he had read the inspection order to the ward.
The room was small enough that every word landed on the walls.
When he finished, he folded the order and held it up.
'Repeat after me,' Noah said. 'I command no one in this room.'
Adrian's mouth tightened.
'I command no one in this room,' he said.
'Again,' Noah said.
'I command no one in this room.'
