Chapter 25: No Plea for the Dead
The hall doors stood open, and Noah walked through them on his own feet.
He passed Adrian at the threshold and kept going.
The murmur died before Valerius could give his order a second time.
Noah stopped at the foot of the dais. He did not kneel.
Valerius sat with one hand on the arm of the chair. He lifted the other.
Two guards dragged the bell across the flagstones.
The iron screamed on the stone. Every noble in the hall turned to follow it.
It was a church bell, wide as a cart wheel, and its rim was crusted with frozen blood.
The guards set it down before the dais and stepped back.
Valerius unfolded a paper and read from it.
He read the names of the dead at the last house on the Fenhold road, one by one.
His flat voice carried to the far wall.
He ended with Senior Priest Halden.
Noah held his face still. He had known the names would be read. He had not known Valerius would read them slowly.
