Chapter 10: The Cabin Again

The border cabin hadn't changed.

It was the same low log building with the same cracked step, and the same smell of cold ash and old pine.

I stood in front of it with my hand on the doorframe.

Three years ago I had pushed this door open and found my husband inside it with his shirt off.

"I'll be at the end of the road," Cade had said in the truck. "Forty yards. If you want me, say my name once."

"I won't need you."

"I know," he said. "Say it once anyway."

I opened the door.

Greta sat at the little table with a lamp turned low.

She had no cloak on.

She wore a grey wool coat buttoned to the neck, and the baby was asleep against her shoulder in the grey blanket.

Her hair had come loose. Her eyes were swollen.

"You came alone," she said.

"Mabel's at the ranch. The man who drove me is at the end of the road. That's alone enough."

She nodded.

"Sit," she said. "Please."

I stayed standing. "You asked a mother at the pups' table which pups reacted to wolfsbane."

She flinched. "Yes."

"You wore a wolfsbane cloak next to the pups' table."

"The uncle told me to wear it," Greta said, and her voice broke open. "He said if a pup got sick, the pack would blame you, because you'd been in the hall that morning. He said you'd come anyway. He knew you'd come."

"And you went along with it."

"I went along with everything."
