Chapter 14: The Bid Presentation
Thatcher came out of the shop and looked down at the invoice.
"That's her L," he said.
"I know," Crosby said. "I've seen that L on every permission slip since I was fifteen."
Tammy came over wiping her hands on a rag. The crew drifted in behind her.
"Is that what I think it is?" she said.
"It's what it looks like," I said.
Crosby closed the folder and held it out to his brother.
Thatcher didn't take it right away.
"Why?" he asked.
"Because for three years I said what she told me to say about you." Crosby's voice was rough. "At the funeral. At Thanksgiving. On the courthouse steps. I said it loud."
"You did."
"So this is me saying something else."
Thatcher took the folder.
He held it against his chest with both arms.
"We take it to the city tomorrow," Tammy said.
"No," Thatcher said.
Everybody looked at him.
"It proves she bought cheap board," he said. "It doesn't prove who sent Dad up. If we show it now, she has two months to explain it away."
"So when?" I asked.
"The night of the vote. All at once. One shot, in front of everybody."
