Chapter 18: The Vote
At six-fifteen, Ivey still wasn't in the council chamber.
Every seat was full. People stood along the back wall and out into the hall.
Bolton Street had come in force. My aunt sat in the front row this time, with the deacon on one side and the white-haired widow on the other.
Across the aisle, Lorene sat in cream and pearls with her lawyer and two men from her board.
"She's not coming," Tammy whispered behind me.
"She said she would."
"She said a lot of things. She said she had a lump."
On my lap was the big blue coffee can, out of my aunt's deep freezer. It was still cold through my jeans.
Crosby was in the last row, alone, with a brown accordion folder.
The mayor opened public comment on the east-side rebuild.
Lorene went first.
Then she turned and looked straight at me.
"I'd only ask the council to consider the character of the people asking for this contract," she said. "One of them is being sued for spreading lies about my company. The other one sent his own father onto a roof he knew was bad."
