Chapter 19: On One Roof
The clerk read the names one by one.
The first councilman said, "Ashwood Homes."
My stomach dropped.
The second said, "Faircloth Roofing."
The councilwoman in red glasses said it louder than she needed to. "Faircloth Roofing."
Then it was Faircloth. And Faircloth. And Faircloth.
By the sixth one, my aunt was standing up.
"Seven to two," the mayor said. "The east-side rebuild is awarded to Faircloth Roofing."
The chamber exploded.
Bolton Street came out of the front row all at once. The deacon was hugging the widow. The new kid threw his spreadsheets in the air.
My aunt got to me first and grabbed my face in both hands.
"Roofs that don't come off," she said.
"Roofs that don't come off."
Then she let go of me and grabbed Thatcher.
Behind her, Crosby stood by the podium, alone, with his folder.
Thatcher reached past my aunt, took his brother by the back of the neck and pulled him in.
Crosby held on to him with both fists in his suit jacket. He was crying.
Ivey stood by the wall with her phone in her hand and didn't come any closer.
