Chapter 11: Eat It
The pack met in the hall again on Sunday, for the weekly meal.
I walked in at noon with Torin on my left and Pia on my right, and the whole room stopped chewing.
Maureen sat at the high table in her good cardigan. Rhett sat beside her, gaunt and grey, with a cup of her mint tea at his elbow.
The steel flask stood beside his plate.
"You have no right to be here," Maureen said.
"I'm here as a wolf of this pack," I said. "The notice didn't strip me of my name. I'd like to speak to the council."
"The council has ruled."
"Then let the council hear something new."
The oldest elder lifted two fingers. "Let her speak."
Torin stepped back into the shadow of the pillar. He had told me he would not say a word unless I asked.
I put the glass vial on the table in front of the elders.
"This is Rhett's blood from two Sundays ago," I said. "Pia drew it at the clinic. A Redfern healer and a Cedar Hollow healer have both tested it."
Pia stood up with the Redfern healer, a gray-haired woman who held a printed sheet.
"Valerian root," Pia said. "Wolfsbane. A small dose, very precise. It causes tremors, a rise in heat, loss of balance."
"Fits," I said.
The hall rumbled.
"There is no flower in his blood," Pia went on. "No pollen, no allergen. The fits are drugs."
"It's medicine," Maureen said. "I give my son a tonic for his headaches. It's a very old remedy."
"With wolfsbane in it?" the Redfern healer said dryly.
"A trace."
"Enough for a tremor."
"Enough, if he takes too much," Maureen said. She turned to the council with her hand at her pearls. "I may have mixed it too strong. I am an old woman. I'd never hurt him."
