Chapter 25: The Hudson Garden

The ballroom at the Plaza had gold on every surface that would hold it.

I stood at the back of it in a dark green dress Libby had picked out in Portland.

She'd called it "revenge, but tasteful."

Libby stood beside me in a borrowed black suit, tugging at the collar.

"I look like a waiter," she said.

"You look great."

"A man just handed me his plate."

The babies were home in Cape Elizabeth with her parents and a freezer full of labeled bottles.

Leo had checked the label on every one of them before we left.

We'd come in late on purpose, after the dinner, when the lights were already low.

The foundation had put Entrant 214 at table thirty-one, by the kitchen doors.

The housekeeper was already sitting there, in a navy dress she told us was her church dress.

Leo had called her on Thursday and asked her to come.

He'd asked, and she'd said yes.

Three hundred people sat between us and the stage.

Teresa was at the head table in white silk, with her cane hooked over her chair.

Angela sat beside her, in red, with her left hand in her lap where nobody could see it.

The foundation's directors filled the next table over.

At the end of it sat the vice chair, a white-haired woman with a straight back who'd known Leo's grandfather for forty years.
