Chapter 11: Off My Land

Keeley's POV

Corbin got out of the SUV holding a bouquet of white roses and a smile he had worn to a hundred client dinners.

He saw me standing too close to Nolan, and the smile held.

"Mar," he said. "There you are."

Grandma Ardis was already on the porch, with her cane in front of her and her braid over her shoulder.

"That's far enough, young man," she said.

"Mrs. Engberg." He stopped at the bottom step with the flowers held out. "I'm so sorry for the disturbance. I've been terribly worried about my wife."

"Your wife is standing right there."

"And I'm grateful she's safe. I came to take her home so she can rest."

I walked up the lawn until I was beside the porch steps, close enough to smell his cologne.

Nolan came with me and stopped one pace behind my shoulder.

"I'm not going home," I said.

"Mar, sweetheart, you're not well."

"You told the sheriff that. You told a deputy I've had episodes about money."

"I was trying to find you."

"You knew where I was. You've had this address for six years."

He didn't blink.

"Nobody here is accusing you of anything," Corbin said, in the voice that made old widows trust him. "I know you've had a hard week. I'd just like to bring you somewhere calm."

"I'll say it in front of her," I said. "So she hears it from me."

Grandma lifted her chin.

"Go ahead, girl."

I turned to face him.

"Six months ago you started sleeping with my cousin. You did it in my bed and you did it in my kitchen. You took my mother's sixty-two thousand dollars six years ago and put it in Alana's name, and you've been paying your firm's payroll out of it every March."
