Chapter 14: The Caseworker
The caseworker came at ten sharp in a county sedan, carrying a clipboard and a canvas bag.
Grandma met her at the door in her good cardigan, with the lemon cake already cut.
"You'll want to see me alone first," she said. "Everybody does. Come through to the front room, and shut the door, and don't touch the piano."
They were in there forty minutes.
Nolan stood at the sink drying one mug over and over.
I sat at the table with the box of letters, the green card and Nolan's phone laid out in a row.
Through the wall I heard Grandma's voice, rising and falling, and once a laugh that was not hers.
The caseworker came out with her pen cap in her teeth and her clipboard hugged to her chest.
"Mrs. Engberg is oriented to date, place and person," she said. "She also told me the name of the last four governors and what she thinks of two of them."
"Three," Grandma said from the doorway.
"Ms. Engberg? Can we sit?"
I had practiced this in the shower for two days.
I had planned to be calm and gracious, and to lead with the good evidence.
What I said was, "He kept my grandmother's letters for six years."
The caseworker looked at me.
"That's the first thing you want me to know?"
"It's the only one that matters. Everything he's told you is built on it."
I pushed the box across the table, and then the green card.
She took her time.
She read three of the letters, and I watched her stop on the one Grandma had written the week of the surgery.
She read the date on the green card twice.
