Chapter 15: Overdue

The library director met us in the staff hallway with a folder against her chest.

"Keeley," she said. "Thank God. I've been trying your phone for a week."

"He turned it off."

"I assumed." She looked at Nolan, then back. "Come into my office. Your friend can come too, if he wants."

Nolan came.

He stood against the filing cabinet with his arms folded, and the director gave him a long look and decided to like him.

On her desk lay two sheets of cream paper with a Dayton medical letterhead.

I read the first one standing up.

It said I suffered from a disorder that caused delusions about money and family.

It recommended that my employer remove me from public-facing duties and notify my husband if I failed to appear for work.

The signature at the bottom was a doctor's, and it was not a doctor I had ever met.

"I called the number on it," the director said. "A man answered who said he was the doctor's assistant. He had Corbin's voice."

"It is Corbin's voice."

"I guessed that, about ten minutes in." She straightened the page. "I've signed your evaluations for seven years, Keeley. You're the only person here who reads to the Thursday toddlers without a script. I wasn't going to put you on leave over a fax."

"Then why did you call?"

"Because he's in the lobby."

I turned around.

Through the glass of the office door I could see the circulation desk, the story rug and the stand of new paperbacks.

Corbin stood at the desk in his quarter-zip with a tote bag over his arm, charming the young man on the computer.

He looked as easy as he did at his own dinners.
