Chapter 11: The Desk
The lock turned with a heavy, oiled click.
Massimo stood with his back to the door and his hand still on the key.
"You shouldn't say that to me in this room," he said.
"Say what?"
"Lock it."
"Why?"
"Because I'll do it."
I walked around the desk.
I did not sit in the chair.
I put my hands flat on the dark wood.
I hitched myself up and sat on the edge of the desk where my father had signed his name for forty years.
The wood was cool through my cream sweater.
"Come here," I said.
He crossed the rug.
He stopped in front of me, close enough that I felt the warmth of him through his suit.
He looked down at me with that quiet, burning patience.
"You waited two years for me to sit in that chair," I said.
"I did."
"I'm not sitting in it today."
"Then what do you want?"
"I want you to call me what they'll call me tomorrow."
His eyes changed.
They went from dark to black.
He sank slowly to his knees on the worn rug, and he put both hands on my thighs.
"Capo," he said.
It went through me.
I had never been called anything like it.
