Chapter 12: The Yacht
The boat was called the Fortunata, and my father had named her after my mother.
She sat in a winter slip at Burnham Harbor, white and dark under the floodlights.
There was a skin of ice around her hull and a light on in the cabin.
It was Friday night, the night before the ball.
"You want to be away from the house," Massimo said, handing me down the gangway.
"How did you know?"
"The captains have been calling the door every ten minutes since you put on the ring."
I held up my right hand.
The heavy gold signet looked strange on my finger, and the wolf's head caught the harbor lights.
I hadn't taken it off since the desk.
The cabin was small and warm, panelled in teak.
There was a galley at one end and a wide bunk at the other, and a narrow door led to a shower.
A heater hummed.
He had lit a lamp.
I took off my coat and then he took off his.
For a moment we only stood there in the lamplight, close, not touching.
"Do you know what I've wanted all week?" I said.
"Tell me."
"To be with you somewhere nobody can hear us."
He smiled slowly.
"That can be arranged."
I stepped into him and kissed him, and the kiss went deep at once, no preamble.
His hands found the hem of my sweater and he pulled it over my head.
I unbuttoned his shirt and pushed it off his shoulders.
We undressed each other in a hurry, boots and belts catching on everything.
When we were bare I pushed him back against the teak bulkhead and kissed down his chest.
"Wait," he said.
"No."
"Marisa."
"I'm in charge tonight," I said.
"I'm the boss."
His eyes flashed.
