Chapter 22: Her Old Room
I said yes in front of forty-nine men, and then I took him upstairs.
Not to the third floor.
I led him down the second-floor hall to the last door, the one nobody had opened in four years.
"Marisa, you don't have to."
"I do."
My old room smelled of dust and cedar and faintly of the lavender my mother used to put in the drawers.
Someone had kept it.
The curtains had been washed and rehung.
The single bed was made with the quilt I had slept under at twelve.
On the shelf stood the horse figurines.
On the wall hung the tiny watercolor of the lake that my mother had painted.
"Who did this?" I asked.
"Aurelio's wife.
She came every Sunday."
I sat on the edge of the bed and the springs sang under me.
Morning light came through the window in a long gold bar and lay across the quilt.
Massimo stood in the doorway.
"Come here," I said.
He came.
He knelt on the rug in front of me and put his forehead against my knees.
"I'm sorry," he said into my skirt.
