Chapter 4: The Vanity
By seven the sun was up over the lake.
I was standing in his bathroom in his white shirt, holding my phone.
The bathroom was marble and steel, with a long counter and a mirror that ran the length of the wall.
Massimo stood at the sink, shaving.
He had put on his charcoal trousers and a fresh shirt, and he hadn't buttoned the shirt yet.
I watched the muscles of his back move as he drew the blade up his jaw.
"You're staring," he said, without turning.
"You're half naked."
"I'm getting dressed."
"You're doing it slowly."
He rinsed the razor and met my eyes in the mirror.
"Show me the phone."
I held it out.
He read Weston's thirty-one missed calls without any expression.
He read Claudia's text with the photo of Penelope in my mother's gown.
A muscle flicked in his cheek, and that was all.
"What do you want done about it?" Massimo asked.
"Nothing."
"Nothing."
"I'll do it myself," I said.
"Next Saturday there's a ball at the Drake. The Kincaid Winter Ball. Penelope will be wearing that dress, and I'm going to ask for it back, in front of every person who saw her take it."
"Good."
"You're not going to tell me not to?"
"I'm going to tell you what time the car is coming," he said.
I laughed, and the sound surprised me.
I hadn't laughed since the powder room.
He dried his face on a towel and set it down.
Then he turned around and looked at me, and his look changed.
"You're shaking again."
"I'm not."
"You're holding your phone with both hands. Put it down."
I put it on the counter.
He crossed the bathroom in two steps, put his hands on my waist and lifted me onto the marble vanity.
The stone was cold under my bare thighs, and his shirt rode up to my hips.
I had nothing on under it.
