Chapter 5: The Gate
A woman in a grey apron brought me black trousers, a cream sweater and boots that fit.
She didn't ask my size and she didn't ask my name.
She called me "Signorina" and smiled the way you smile at someone you've missed for years.
By eight I walked down the drive with my hair brushed and my hands steady.
Massimo walked three steps behind me.
Forty men lined the path to the gate, and not one of them looked at me directly.
Every one of them stood a little straighter as I went by.
The gate was iron, ten feet tall, with a gold P worked into the bars.
Weston stood on the other side of it with his white roses.
He saw the men before he saw me.
His face went through three expressions.
Then he found the old one, the smile he used on waiters and receptionists.
"Mari," he said.
"Thank God. Open this, would you?"
"No."
His smile stayed on his face.
"Let's not do this in the street."
"You're the one standing in the street," I said.
Claudia stepped up beside him in a camel coat and her pearls.
She looked at the house behind me, then at the men, then at my borrowed sweater, and her lip curled.
"Whatever game this is, it's cruel," she said.
"Dressing up some gangster's house for a girl who's had a rough night. Weston has been up all night. He was frantic."
"He gave my dress to Penelope."
"It was a dress."
"It was my mother's."
"Then you should have been more careful with it," Claudia said.
Weston held the roses through the bars.
They smelled sweet and cold.
"Look," he said, in the reasonable voice that I used to find kind.
"I was out of line. Penelope was upset, and I panicked, and I did a stupid thing. We can fix it. We'll go ahead in June as planned. Mother will say it was a prank, and we'll all laugh."
