Chapter 9: The Edge
The gown was black silk crepe, high in the front and cut away to the base of my spine at the back.
The dressmaker had left it hanging in the third-floor room on a padded hanger.
I stood in front of it for a full minute before I touched it.
"Put it on," Massimo said from the door.
"You're not supposed to see it."
"I'm not your groom. Put it on."
I stepped into it and drew it up my body.
The silk was cool and heavy, and it settled over my hips.
I couldn't reach the zipper.
He crossed the floor and stood behind me.
I felt his knuckles drag up my bare spine as he drew the zip closed.
I looked at the mirror.
The woman in it was not the one who had stood in a slip in the Kincaid ballroom.
She was straight-backed and pale-shouldered, with a throat, and she looked like someone you did not interrupt.
"There you are," he said quietly.
"Who?"
"The woman I've been waiting to meet."
His hands rested on my shoulders.
In the mirror his eyes were dark and fixed on mine.
I watched them travel down my back to the bare place where the dress ended.
His mouth touched my shoulder blade.
"Don't," I said.
"The zipper took her an hour to set."
"Then you'd better hold still."
He pushed the zipper down again.
He didn't take the dress off.
He pushed it off my shoulders and down to my waist and let it bunch there in black silk folds.
My bare breasts met the cold air.
I watched his hands come around from behind and cup them, in the mirror.
"Look at yourself," he said.
"You keep saying that."
"Because you keep not believing it."
He turned me around.
He walked me backward to the bed and sat me down on the edge of it, with the dress around my hips.
