Chapter 13: Half of Everything
"Half," I said.
"Half," Austin said, and he smiled at the barn like a man taking a bow.
Two hundred people stared at him.
Nobody clapped this time.
A man in a camel coat stepped out from the bar, where he had been drinking club soda all night.
"I represent Mr. Tallmadge," the man said, to the mayor. "I have the filing here, Your Honor."
"I'm not a judge," said the mayor.
"Then I'll hand it to the lady."
He held a thick envelope out to me with two fingers.
I took it, because everyone was watching, and I didn't open it.
"Marital property," the lawyer said. "The estate vested during the marriage. My client is entitled to half of the land, the inn and the fund."
"Your client offered me a check for five thousand dollars," I said. "I tore it in half."
A laugh went through the crowd, short and cruel.
Austin's smile slipped.
"We can settle tonight," the lawyer said, lower. "A quarter of the hill, and Mr. Tallmadge drops the claim and the press release."
"Everyone goes home."
"A quarter," I said.
"It's very reasonable."
