Chapter 24: Home
"Yes," I said into the phone, with Rory's hand still warm on my hip. "Yes, I'll buy it."
"You haven't heard the price."
"Then tell me the price after the yes."
The vet laughed so hard she coughed, and I hung up.
Rory pulled the quilt over both of us.
"You just bought an animal hospital," he said into my shoulder.
"I did."
"On our wedding morning."
"You bought a ring on a Tuesday," I said. "Neither of us is allowed to talk."
Thanksgiving came three weeks later, gray and cold, with the first real snow.
I woke before light in the big bed at the stone house.
It was our bed now, and the turkey was already on my mind.
Rory was asleep on his back with one arm over his head.
The scar showed pale in the gray light, running down the inside of his forearm.
I looked at him for a minute, my husband, in my house, in my own bed.
Then I slid on top of him and took him in my hand.
He woke the way he did everything, all at once.
"Ada," he said, thick with sleep.
