Chapter 10: Emergency Hearing
Clark came around the workbench and stood beside me.
Not in front of me. Beside.
"You've delivered it," he said to Alexis. "You can go."
"Oh, I'm going." She looked him up and down. "Byron said you were a nobody. He didn't say you were a nobody with a crush."
"Get out of my shop."
She picked a curl of cherry shaving off the bench and dropped it on the floor.
"See you Monday, Patient L. Wear something nice. Judges like that."
The bell jangled behind her.
Davey, in his crib-rail playpen, blew a raspberry at the door.
I opened the envelope with paint still on my fingers.
The incident report was two pages, typed on clinic letterhead.
On Wednesday afternoon the ward lost her grip on the infant and he struck his head on the kitchen tile. The ward showed no awareness of the event minutes later.
At the bottom, a signature in purple ink.
A. Neville, household aide.
On Wednesday afternoon, my son had been asleep with his fist in his mouth, and Alexis had been measuring his room.
On Monday morning the courtroom was smaller than I'd pictured.
Wood benches. A flag. A judge in her sixties with half-moon glasses and a stack of files.
Byron sat at the left table in his navy suit with a silver-haired lawyer.
Alexis sat in the row behind him in a pale pink dress, hands folded on her belly.
She looked like a greeting card.
I sat at the right table with my attorney.
Jeanine sat behind me with her platinum hair slicked down and no hoops in, which was how I knew she was scared.
Clark sat beside her in a jacket I'd never seen. It didn't fit in the shoulders.
Byron's lawyer went first.
He talked about seven years of devotion.
He talked about the world-famous book.
