Chapter 11: The Luncheon
On Friday at noon, the Fairfield Garden Guild held its spring luncheon at the country club, and Marilyn Alden stood at the podium as chair.
A hundred women sat at round tables under chandeliers, in pastel suits and good pearls.
I walked in at the back with a canvas tote on my arm and Bea beside me.
Nobody stopped me, because I was on the guest list.
Marilyn had never taken me off it.
"We gather in the name of family," Marilyn was saying. "Family is the thing that holds when everything else fails."
Lacey sat at the head table, in a loose green dress, with her hand across her stomach.
She saw me first.
Her hand went still.
I walked up the center aisle slowly, one hand under my belly.
"Cora," Marilyn said into the microphone, smiling for the room. "Dear. We didn't expect you. Please sit. We can talk afterward."
"I'd like to say something to the Guild."
"This isn't the time."
"It's a luncheon about family," I said. "I'm family."
A woman at the nearest table said, "Let her speak."
Another said, "Marilyn, let her."
I reached the podium.
Marilyn could have pushed me away, in front of a hundred women, and she knew what that would look like.
She stepped aside.
I took the microphone.
"My name is Cora Lindell. I'm married to Marilyn's son. Last Saturday, at my own baby shower, he announced that my best friend was carrying his child."
A murmur went through the room.
"Some of you were there. Some of you applauded."
I looked at one table, and a woman in lavender studied her napkin.
