Chapter 17: The Corridor

Patrick's POV

At one in the morning I was sitting in a plastic chair in the maternity corridor, holding a baby not yet a day old.

Cora had asked me to.

She had been awake for twenty-two hours, and she had put her head back on the pillow and said, "Take her for a minute, I'm going to close my eyes."

Then she was asleep before I answered.

The nurse had put the baby in my arms with two quick instructions and left.

I had not held a child since I was a boy.

She weighed almost nothing, and I was afraid to shift my arm.

She had a dark swirl of hair, a creased forehead and one fist pushed up under her chin, and she was frowning at nothing.

"You look like your mother," I told her.

She sneezed.

I held very still, in case that was a mistake, and nothing else happened.

Her free hand opened, found the front of my shirt and closed on it.

I did not move for a long time after that.

Down the corridor a night nurse was filling in a chart, and one of the officers from the afternoon was dozing on his feet by the lift.

The families were gone, but the chairs along the wall still showed where they had sat.

Marilyn Alden had been held for nine hours.

The younger detective walked up the corridor at ten past one, and I stood slowly, with the baby, to meet her.

"Mr. Ansley."

"Detective."

"I wanted Ms. Lindell to hear it first, but she's asleep." She kept her voice low. "Mrs. Alden has been charged with forgery, conspiracy and attempted unlawful removal of a child. Bail was refused tonight."
