Chapter 7: Zero Connections
The board of Alden Technologies met at four o'clock on Tuesday, in a glass room on the ninth floor, and I was not on the guest list.
I walked in anyway.
Patrick was on my left and Bea was on my right, and the receptionist had forgotten to call security.
Six people in suits sat around a long table.
Bradley was at the head of it, in his best navy jacket, with his mother in a chair against the wall behind him.
"Cora," the board chair said, half rising. "This is a closed session."
"It's my license," I said. "I'd like to be present when it expires."
Nobody told me to leave.
Bea set a thick folder in front of the chair.
"This is the signed license, with Bradley's signature dated the morning of his wedding," she said. "It lists Cora Lindell as sole owner of the core code. You'll find clause nine on page four."
The chair read.
The man beside him read over his shoulder.
One by one, every board member turned a page, and every one of them stopped at the same line.
"Bradley," the chair said slowly. "You told us this software was yours."
"It is mine. Functionally. She's my wife, so the distinction is academic."
"It's not academic when she can turn it off."
"She won't."
Everyone at the table looked at me.
I put my hands on my stomach and said nothing.
My daughter chose that moment to kick, loud enough that the woman nearest me saw the fabric of my dress move.
"Is that a yes?" the chair asked.
"It's a clock," I said.
I looked at the screen on the wall.
It showed the Alden Technologies dashboard, with four million green dots and a number in the corner.
