Chapter 8: The Recording
The family courtroom smelled of floor polish and old paper.
At nine on Wednesday morning, I sat at the left table with my lawyer, a gray-haired woman who had not smiled once since we met.
Bradley sat across the aisle with Marilyn's lawyer, a young man in an expensive suit.
Marilyn sat behind them.
Lacey sat next to her, in a pale dress that did not fit tightly anywhere.
"This is an emergency petition," the judge said, reading. "It asks for temporary custody of an unborn child, on the grounds that the mother is mentally unfit. Let's hear the evidence."
Marilyn's lawyer stood and called the doctor.
He was the man who had run my IVF for four years.
He had a soft voice and a gold pen, and he had once held my hand through a negative test.
"Doctor, in your professional opinion," the lawyer began, "is Ms. Lindell fit to care for a newborn?"
"I have grave concerns," the doctor said, not looking at me. "She has been paranoid and obsessive. She has claimed she owns a company her husband built, and she has accused her best friend of betrayal without cause."
Lacey dabbed her eye.
"Thank you," the lawyer said.
My lawyer stood.
She did not hurry, and she did not look at her notes.
"Doctor. When did you last examine Ms. Lindell?"
"At her last embryo transfer. Eleven months ago."
"And the last time you spoke to her?"
"At that appointment."
"So you have not seen her in eleven months."
