Chapter 6: Biscuit

Cormac went home at five in the morning, as I had told him to.

He dressed in the dark without a word, and he stood at the door with his hand on the knob.

He did not look back, and I loved him for it and hated him for it.

I slept for two hours with the blind up.

At eight, Padraig's wife texted me from a number I did not know.

I'm outside St. Margaret's school at half two. Cormac hasn't told me to. I'm telling you myself. Don't come near the gate if you don't want to be seen.

I read it three times.

I had met her twice, at Christmas, a small brisk woman in a bright red coat.

She had pressed a plate of ham into my hand and then looked at my wrist.

She had known something.

Everyone had known something.

I was at the end of the school street at twenty past two in a grey coat and a knitted hat, with my hands in my pockets.

The street was narrow and lined with parked cars.

The school was a low brick building with a green door and a chain-link fence.

Mothers stood in clusters by the gate with their phones out.

Padraig's wife waited near the corner with a scooter in one hand and a lunch bag in the other.

She nodded to me once and looked away.

The bell rang.

The green door opened, and children poured out of it, loud and sudden.

Their backpacks were bigger than their bodies.

I looked for him in the crowd of small heads.

I found him at the back, walking alone and dragging his coat along the pavement behind him.

The brown stuffed dog stuck out of the top of his backpack, and he was looking at his own feet.

He tucked his lip in as he walked.

I stood very still, as I had learned to do in a country where I could not speak the language.

Padraig's wife went forward and took his hand and said something to him.
