Chapter 4: Rocco's POV: Capri

Rocco's POV

By the fourth day in Capri, my wife still hadn't called.

I sat on the villa's terrace with a coffee I didn't want and watched the ferry cross the bay.

My phone lay face up on the table.

It had shown nothing since Monday except my own text.

Stop being dramatic.

I had meant it as a joke, mostly.

Gemma sulked quietly and for days.

But she always came around by the fifth day, with a plate of something she had made and no apology, and I always ate it and that was that.

"You're doing it again," Sabrina said behind me.

She came out in a white linen dress with her hair loose and sat on the arm of my chair.

"Doing what?"

"Staring at the phone. She's fine, Rocco. She's got your mother and the whole house. Let her miss you."

"She doesn't miss people," I said. "She waits for them."

Sabrina laughed and pushed my shoulder.

I had known her since I was seven.

She had been the driver's daughter who climbed the wall to steal our peaches, and then the girl who sat with me the night my father had his first stroke.

She was easy.

Nothing in the world was ever Sabrina's fault, and somehow that was restful.

"I'll get the car," she said. "Dinner at the harbor. You've barely eaten."

She went in, and my phone buzzed on the table.

It wasn't Gemma.
