Chapter 7: The Uncle's Offer
I didn't go out to the car.
I sat down in my father's chair behind my father's desk, with the five captains standing against the wall, and told the guard to let Mr. Santoro in when he got tired of waiting.
He lasted forty minutes.
At eight he came through the office door in a black overcoat, with a gold ring on each hand and a smile on his face.
He brought the two men who had waved at me, and a third I didn't know.
"Gemma," he said warmly. "Look at you. Your father's chair suits you."
"Zio Nunzio."
"Not Zio anymore, I think. Not after this morning." He took a chair without being offered one. "You fired my accountant in front of the whole yard."
"Yes."
"That was a mistake."
"I'll live with it."
He smiled again.
His smile had always been the warmest thing about him, and I had spent fifteen years believing in it.
"Let me be a gentleman about this," he said. "You're young. You've had a shock. Someone filled your head with old stories, and you believed the first man who cried at your gate."
Aurelio shifted by the window, and I felt him not speak.
"I have a better proposal," Nunzio went on. "You come home. Rocco will be back in a month, and he's a different man when he's lost something. We will forget the papers and this nonsense. I will keep running the port, and you will keep your name and your house and a monthly allowance that would make a queen jealous."
"An allowance from my own company."
"From a family that fed you," he said, softly.
