Chapter 14: At the Gate
William's study smelled of leather and cold coffee.
He did not sit down.
"I want you to hear it from me," he said. "Before it's on the news."
Jude stayed standing too.
"I told you not to ruin them. I told you in this room."
"And I didn't."
William laid a thin folder on the desk.
"For two years, George's father sold Parker Group the motors for our blenders. Three times the market price. I signed the renewals without reading them, because his son was dating mine, and I wanted you happy."
Jude stared at the folder.
"Last week, after the video, I read the invoices."
"You read them."
"Our lawyers sent a letter asking for the difference back. That's all. I didn't call a bank. I didn't call anyone." William's mouth went flat. "His bank saw the letter and called him."
"So it was already failing."
"For years. We were the only thing holding it up, and we were paying triple for the privilege."
Jude sat down heavily on the arm of the leather chair.
He had spent a year being proud that George's family were so generous with their time.
Ken stood by the door with his hands behind his back.
He had not said a word.
"I'm not sorry," William said, more quietly. "I'm sorry you have to carry it. I'm not sorry it ended."
A knock came on the frame.
The head of security stood there, with his earpiece in.
"Sir. There's a young man at the front gate. He says he'll wait all day."
Nobody had to ask who.
Jude stood up.
"I'll go."
"Jude, wait."
"I want to." He took a breath. "I'd like to do it once, in daylight, and be done."
