Chapter 10: Snowed In
The blizzard took the power at nine, and by ten Cathal had dragged every blanket in the house down to the front room.
Snow slammed against the windows in sheets, and the old gas fireplace threw orange light up the walls.
I lay on a pile of quilts on the rug in my underwear and his gray sweater.
Beside me sat a bowl of snow that he had scooped off the stoop.
"You said once," he said from the hearth.
"At Christmas."
"I've been counting," I said.
"Fourteen, Dwyer. It's fourteen."
"It was fifteen if you count the coat room."
"I don't count the coat room," I said.
"It was mine."
He laughed, low, and came across the rug on his knees.
He wore only his jeans, unbuttoned.
The fire showed every scar on his chest and the gold medal on its chain.
He put his hand on my ankle and slid it slowly up my calf.
"Come here," I said.
"No," he said, and smiled.
"Lie still. I want to look at you."
He pushed the sweater up to my collarbone and sat back on his heels.
His eyes moved over me, and I felt them on every inch of skin.
"Look at you in the firelight," he said.
"I think about this at the club, with the old men talking."
"I think about it in the middle of a sentence."
"Tell me what you think," I said.
"I think about your mouth on me again."
"I think about you flat on your back with your knees up and my face between your legs.
"And nobody in the world to hear you."
"That's a start," I said, and my voice shook.
He reached into the bowl.
He took a handful of snow and packed it in his fist until it was a rough, hard lump, then held it over my stomach.
