Chapter 11: Redeemed

I didn't touch it.

I set the coffeepot down next to it.

"Where did you get the money?" I said.

"The pack has money."

"So the pack paid seven hundred dollars to get back what your mother stole from them."

He flinched at stole.

"She didn't steal it. It was hers."

"I know," I said. "I read her letter."

That stopped him.

I watched it go through his face. He didn't know what was in the box. He'd never even known there was a box.

"What letter?"

"The one she left for me. Not for you."

The old man with the newspaper had stopped reading out loud.

The two nurses were watching over their coffee.

Nash leaned on the counter.

"Jolene, listen. I've thought about this all night. The elder can't try a woman who wears the Alpha's mark. It's against every law we have."

"So I'd be your Luna."

He hesitated.

It was a very small hesitation.

I'd spent eight years learning to read them.

"You'd be mine," he said. "Under my protection. You'd live in the valley, in the lake cabin. Bodie could come over whenever he wanted."

"And Delaney?"

"The pack still needs..."

"A Luna," I said. "A real one. A wolf."

He looked down at the pendant.

"It's the only way I can stop this," he said. "Wear it. Come home. Nobody touches you."

"And the three dead wolves?"

"What?"

"If the elder can't try me, he'll stop looking. Three people died on that ridge, Nash."

"And whoever did it walks around the valley in a red coat and holds our son's hand."

"Delaney saved my life."

"Delaney wore gloves on a walk."
