Chapter 15: Three Graves

Ross moved first.

He came around me and stood between her and the kitchen door.

"Neither of us," he said.

"The elder says it was her." The woman didn't take her eyes off me. "He said it over my son's grave yesterday. He said her name."

"I never met your son," I said.

"He was nineteen. He was in a trap on Pike Ridge for two days before anybody found him."

Her voice didn't break. It had already broken a long time ago.

"He chewed at his own leg. Did you know that? He tried to chew it off to get out."

I held on to the edge of the counter.

"I didn't set it," I said. "I didn't set any of them."

"You held the heir's trap in your bare hands. Half the pack saw it."

"Yes. Because I'm human. That's all it proves."

She took a step toward me.

Ross took one toward her.

I put my hand on his arm.

"Wait," I said. "Please. I want to show you something."

My backpack was under the counter, where it always was now.

I took out the cookie tin with the windmill on it.
