Chapter 20: Pike Ridge Again

I knelt in the gravel and put my hands on the jaws.

Cold. Just cold.

I pushed the levers down with my knee and pulled his hat out.

There was no blood on it.

The jaws had been sprung on purpose, with the hat set inside them, right in the headlights where whoever came looking would see it first.

"They want you to find this," the woman said behind me.

"I know."

I turned in a circle in the light.

Boot prints in the soft dirt by the door. Big ones, two sets. A long scrape where something heavy had been dragged.

Then paw prints, going up into the trees.

I held the hat against my chest and took out my phone.

Nash answered on the first ring.

There was wind behind his voice. He was outside.

"Jolene. The elder says you broke into his house."

"They took Ross."

Silence.

"Off Pike Ridge," I said. "His truck's here. The door's open. They put his hat in a trap so I'd see it."

"Who did?"

"The same two men who came to my house with Delaney. You know who."
