Chapter 10: The Gala
The youngest mechanic worked weekends parking cars at the Lakeview Hotel, and he got Cal a valet jacket by six.
"They'll never look at your face," he said. "Nobody looks at the valet."
"Kira asked me not to come."
"Who's Kira?"
"Someone I should listen to."
Cal put on the jacket anyway.
The ballroom held three hundred people in black tie, a string quartet and a stage with a banner behind it.
*Ridgway Foundation: The Heart of the City.*
In the front row, Lena sat in a white gown with Preston's hand over hers.
Gerald Ridgway stood at the podium with a glass of water.
"Tonight we honor a young woman who has shown us what it means to stand by the people you love," Gerald said, and the room clapped before he finished. "Lena Starke, please come up."
Lena crossed the stage.
Her eyes were wet, and the lights made them shine.
Cal carried a tray of empty glasses toward the side steps and set it on a table.
He took a folded paper out of the jacket and walked up the steps behind the quartet.
No one stopped him until he was at the podium.
He took the microphone from its stand.
"Good evening," Cal said.
His voice filled the ballroom.
Three hundred heads turned.
Lena's smile froze on her face.
"My name is Cal Bracken," he said. "Three years ago I signed a confession to a hit and run on Larch Street. I did not do it. I did it because a woman in this room told me the Ridgway family would pay one hundred thousand dollars for my mother's heart surgery."
The room had gone entirely still.
