Chapter 14: The Door

I couldn't sleep that night, and I didn't try very hard.

Ronan was in the long hall with the Alphas, deciding what to do about Stonewater.

I sat on the edge of our bed with the green gown still on, listening to the baby turn over.

He had started doing it a week ago, a slow roll.

Somebody knocked on the door of the tower room.

It was three soft knocks, and I knew them.

I knew them from three years of coming home and hearing them on the other side of a door I had just locked.

I opened it anyway.

Torin stood on the landing alone, with no guard and no coat.

His hair was wet with sleet.

He looked ten years older than he had in the spring.

"How did you get up here?"

"The guard on the stair knows my face." He gave a thin, awful smile. "I told him I was bringing you a message from the beta."

"You lied to a guard."

"I'm out of things I'm good at." He tried to laugh and coughed instead. "Can I come in?"

"No."

"Then I'll say it here."

He put his back against the stone wall, because I think his legs wouldn't hold him otherwise.

"I can't shift," he said. "I tried again an hour ago, out on the bridge. Nothing. My wolf won't answer me."

"I know."

"The elders will take the seat by spring. They'll say I'm no Alpha, and they'll be right."

I said nothing.

"So I'm offering it to you."

I stared at him.

"The seat," he said. "Stonewater. Come home, with the baby, and sit in it. I'll stand behind you. I'll carry your tea. You're the one they bowed to, Wynne. Not me."
