Chapter 15: The Second Night

Ronan's POV

We searched for Odette Brannigan all day and found nothing.

My wardens turned over every room in the guest wing, the cellars and the old well house.

By dark I had run out of places to send them, and I climbed the east tower with my hands still smelling of cold iron.

Wynne was in the bed with the quilt pushed down to her hips, wearing my shirt.

She looked up from a book.

"Anything?"

"No."

"She'll turn up. People like her always do."

"I'd like her to turn up in a cell."

"Come here."

I sat on the edge of the mattress, and she took my hand and set it low on her stomach, under the shirt.

Her skin was warm.

"Wait," she said. "He's been quiet since supper."

I waited, because I would have waited all night.

For a long moment there was only her heartbeat under my palm, and the sound of sleet against the glass.

Then something knocked against my hand.

It was small and quick, a heel or an elbow, and it hit the exact middle of my palm.

I didn't move.

I don't think I breathed.

"There," Wynne whispered.

He kicked again, harder.

"He knows your hand," she said. "He's done it every night when you fall asleep with it there."

"You never told me."

"You'd have stopped sleeping."

I laughed, and the laugh turned into something I did not recognize.

I put my forehead down on her stomach and stayed there.

Her fingers went into my hair.

"Ronan."

"I have never wanted to keep anything," I said into her skin.

"I've ruled a high country for twenty years, and I never wanted to keep a person. My mother was kept until her bond ate her. I swore I'd let go of anyone who wanted to go."

"I know."

"I want to keep you. I want to keep him. I don't know how to do it without turning into the thing I swore I wouldn't be."
