Chapter 22: The Mark

Wynne's POV

I gave Elias to Edda at the top of the tower stairs and told her not to wait up.

"I wasn't going to," she said, and shut the door in my face with a very satisfied look.

Ronan stood on the landing with snow still melting in his hair.

We had ridden the whole way back from the south bank without a word.

My throat had stayed warm under my collar the entire time.

"You said two days," he said.

"I said a day. I'm early."

"Wynne."

"Yes."

He didn't understand.

I watched him not understand.

"I'm answering you," I said. "Yes. I'll stay. Not for the year and not for the law. I'll stay because I want to come up these stairs every night and find you here."

He closed his eyes.

When he opened them again he looked a lot older, and a lot younger.

"Say it again."

"Yes."

He took my face in both hands and kissed me against the door so hard my head knocked the wood.

We didn't make it to the bed.

I got his coat off him in the doorway and his shirt onto the floor of the sitting room.

He pulled the pins out of my hair one at a time, with his hands shaking.

My braid came down over my shoulder.

"Slow," he muttered. "I want to be slow."

"No."

"Wynne."

"I've been slow with you. I've been patient. It's been a month and a half and I want you tearing my dress."

He tore it.

It was the green wool, and Edda would have his head, and I didn't care.

He lifted me against the wall by the fire with my legs round his waist, and we both went still when his cock pressed against me.

I was soaked.

I wanted him so much my whole body ached with it.

"Ronan," I said. "Bed. Now."

He carried me there and put me on my back on the quilt.

He stood over me, breathing hard, the firelight on his scars.

I looked up at the man who held a country in his hand.
