Chapter 5: The Healer's Daughter

Odette came into the hall with road dust on her hem and a Stonewater banner held in front of her.

Two Stonewater guards walked behind her, and the whole table went quiet to watch.

She knelt before the King's chair, as the old law required, and kept her eyes down.

"Majesty," she said, in her soft voice. "The Stonewater elders send me to ask for your seal. By the custom of the packs, a new Luna is not a Luna until the King has seen her."

Her collar was open.

Low on her throat sat a fresh mating mark, still red and raised.

A thin grey rim had spread around its edge, like the ashes left when a fire has burned too fast.

Nobody else seemed to notice it.

Then she lifted her head and looked straight at me, and her eyes filled.

"Wynne. Thank the Moon you're alive. I begged him not to do it. You have to know that."

I had last seen that face over the clasp of my gown, telling me to eat something.

"Did you," I said.

"I cried for two days."

"You must be exhausted."

Ronan did not look at her.

"The seal is given at Moon Court and nowhere else," he said. "You may stay as a guest until then. The marshal will find you a room."

"Thank you, Majesty."

Odette bowed again, and for the length of one breath her mouth tightened, before it smoothed back into grief.

I went out to the long gallery, because I could not breathe in that room.

Cold air came through the shutters, and I stood with my hands on the stone sill, watching the dark mountains.
