Chapter 16: Everett's POV

Everett's POV

The petition ran to nine pages, and Damon had signed every one of them.

I read it in my kitchen at six in the morning with my shirt buttoned wrong.

He alleged that Adeline Hartigan had entered her own name as steward of record without her Alpha's knowledge.

He alleged that I had accepted the entry knowing it was false.

He asked the Council to void the deed, return the land to its prior holder, and strike both of us from the committee.

Prior holder meant him.

Adeline had read it standing up and gone back upstairs without a word.

I'd seen her face.

It was the face she'd worn in the library the first night, when she read me five rules and asked if I understood.

I put the paper down and went to the front door, because I had heard a car at the gate.

It was a long black car with the engine running, and it was parked across the end of my drive.

Damon sat in the back with the window down.

I walked out in my shirt sleeves and stood at the gate with the iron bars between us.

"Everett."

"Damon."

"You look tired." He smiled. "Did you read it?"

"I did."

"It's a good petition. My lawyers are very good." He rested his arm on the window. "I'll withdraw it this afternoon, if you sign the land over to Falk Capital for a dollar."

"That isn't mine to sign."

"Then talk her into it. You're clever. You found her."

There were marks on my back where her nails had gone.
