Chapter 11: The Black Eyes

I didn't open the temple door.

Min-jun reached for it and I took his wrist and pulled him back.

"Not tonight," I said.

"The door's right there."

"And you've got two black eyes and four dead men behind you. Sit down."

He sat down.

We made camp inside the outer wall, in the corner where the wall made a right angle and the wind couldn't get in.

Ren built a small fire. My mother sat against the wall with her stick across her knees.

Min-jun sat by the fire with his back to us and didn't talk.

His eyes went back to brown after an hour.

At dark he started shaking.

It came on slow. First his hands. He put them under his arms.

Then his shoulders.

Then his whole body.

"Min-jun," I said.

"I'm fine."

"You're not fine."

He got up and walked to the wall and put his back against it and slid down to the ground.

His teeth were chattering.

I went over and crouched in front of him.

His skin was hot. Not fever hot. Burning hot, like a stone left in the sun.

"Ren," I said.

Ren came over and looked at him.

He didn't touch him. He looked at the way Min-jun was holding his own arms, and the way his jaw was set, and the way his eyes kept flicking to the fire and away.
