I woke up in the Amber Forest.
I was lying on my back in the ash.
The trees around me were black and bare and still standing.
The temple was gone.
Not fallen. Gone.
There was a hole in the ground where it had been, fifty paces across, filled with broken stone and nothing else.
The sky above it was empty.
The gateway wasn't overhead anymore.
It was west, far west, where the hills were, hanging over the land the way it had before.
Still open.
I sat up.
My wrist was wrapped. Somebody had wrapped it. The cloth was gray and dirty but the bleeding had stopped.
Ren was sitting against a black trunk with his brother's body beside him.
