We locked the doctor in the cellar under the tailor shop and put a chair against the door.

Gina went upstairs with the phone in her fist and did not look at either of us.

I stood in the dark shop among the headless mannequins and waited until the boards stopped creaking overhead.

Nico came down last.

"You knew," I said.

He stopped on the bottom step.

"You knew she breathed."

"I knew."

"How long have you known?"

"Since the night."

"Since the night," I said. "So when I stood in that cemetery with a shovel, you knew."

"Yes."

"When I said her name out loud to a stone."

"Yes."

"And you stood there."

"Yes, Elena."

I walked at him and he did not step back.

This time I did not hit him.

I put both hands flat on his chest and shoved him against the wall, and the mannequins swayed.

"Tell me where she is."

His eyes were wet.

"I can't."

"Because Marco will find out."

"Because the doctor is in your cellar, and Marco has men on every road out of Essex County, and if you walk out of that door tonight you will not be able to keep your face still tomorrow."

"I'm not a child."

"You're a mother, and I need you to be able to lie to him."

I went still.

It was the first time anyone had used the word since the funeral.

"Tomorrow," Nico said. "After the table has met. I'll tell you every word, and I'll take you myself. I swear on my mother."
