Chapter 12: The Other Woman

Level B of the Marlowe Tower garage was almost empty, and every light in it hummed.

Thane had parked on the street with his phone open on a call to mine.

"One word and I'm down there," he had said.

"I know."

"Nadine, I mean it."

"I know that too."

I walked between the concrete pillars with my keys in my fist.

A white car sat alone in the far corner with its engine off.

The driver's door was open, and a woman sat sideways in the seat with her feet on the concrete.

She was wearing grey sweatpants and a hooded sweatshirt, and she had no makeup on.

I would not have known her.

"Cassidy," I said.

She looked up.

Her eyes were swollen, and a thin trail of mascara had dried on one cheek.

"You came," she said.

"You said he was lying to both of us. I'm here to hear what that means."

She held out her left wrist.

The diamond bracelet lay in her palm.

"I took it off an hour ago," she said. "I couldn't stand it on me."

I did not take it.

"Where did you get the money for all of it?" I asked. "The apartment, the car, the hotel in Paris."

"Trevor's fund. That's what he told me, from the first week."

"There is no fund, Cassidy."

"I know that now."

Her voice cracked on the last word, and I felt something in my chest I did not want to feel.

I did not want to feel sorry for her.

"He told me you were cold," she said. "That you'd cheated, and you'd taken everything in the marriage, and he was waiting for the divorce to be final."

"I never cheated on anyone," I said. "I was home every night."
